KD Country: Renziehausen Park Rose Garden

Pittsburgh Rose Society

MCKEESPORT (KDKA) ― Ever want to just stop and smell the roses? You may be surprised to learn that the second biggest rose garden in Pennsylvania is located in McKeesport.

"This is roughly three acres," McKeesport Garden Club Member John Conselaro said. He says the property in Renziehausen Park was leased to the club in 1938. However, it was rundown and overgrown with weeds when he first visited, 22 years ago.

"We got some people together and we got the Rose Society," he said. "We just came out here and we just kept working at it. I never thought it would come this far. I really didn't."

Now there are rows and rows of roses. There are hundreds of varieties flanked by a single row of mixed perennials ranging from cactus to Black-Eyed Susans. A waterfall completes the mood of tranquility, in a place far removed from the city that surrounds it.

"You know people are always smelling roses when they go up to it and this is one of the nicest," he said, indicating a large yellow rose. The variety is called "Double Delight."

The garden club has also created its own hybrid called the "Renzie Rose."

Frequent visitor Pam Paradise snaps graduation shots of her friend's daughter, in a gazebo that is often used for weddings, as well.

"I've done my daughter's graduation pictures and this year I'm doing a good friend's pictures," Paradise said.

The award winning garden in Renziehausen Park is blooming like never before.

"It gives me a feeling of elation," Conselaro said. "Coming out here and just looking at the beauty, smelling the roses. I think it's really great."

The rose garden is open to the public, free of charge, seven days a week.
