KD Country: Butler County Prison

BUTLER (KDKA) ― The Butler area is a splash of color this time of year, but accommodations near the County Courthouse in Butler come in dismal shades of grey.

"This jail being the age that it is, it does have a hard environment to it." Butler County Prison warden Rich Gigliotti said.

The now vacant facility that opened its barred doors in the mid-50s, closed this past summer.

"We were overcrowded at times. We were shipping a lot of inmates out to other county facilities," Gigliotti said.

The lodgings were less than commodious, but with the new prison less than a block away there's a laundry list of stuff to dispose of.

Auctioneer Mark Barkley figures old brass keys should fetch at least a $100 each. Everything must go, including the kitchen sink.

"The pot ought to bring anywhere from $50 to $100. The convection oven should bring somewhere between f$500 and $1,000. The double griddle, again it should bring $500 to $1,000. The bund coffee should bring in, I'm going to guess between $300 and $500," Barkley said.

County Commissioners Dale Pinkerton and James Kennedy said the six-story facility will alleviate overcrowding.
