KD Country: Eden Hall

RICHLAND (KDKA) ― The big farmhouse in Richland, spans nearly a century. However, the 388-acre spread was donated to Chatham University along with Puma the farm cat less than a year ago.

Eden Hall farm was the home of the late Sebastian Mueller, manager of a famous food company owned by his cousin, H.J. Heinz.

Chatham professors Lynne Brucker and Kerri Lacharite have teamed up to bring food back to the table at Eden Hall.

"As soon as we got the farm I went 'organic garden!' Lynne Bruckner said.

Faculty, staff and students cultivate produce ranging from asparagus beans to zucchini.

The first crop of organic seeds were planted in Sebastian Mueller's greenhouse in February. Within a matter of months they bloomed, so the place was practically bursting with plants which they then moved to the garden across the street.

Environmental pioneer Rachel Carson, a Chatham graduate, would probably approve of her alma mater's organic garden.

"If you're thinking locally, you're not dealing with transportation costs. Cost of fertilizers, necessarily pesticides, but there may be some more, you know labor costs involved," Kerri LaCharite said.

The sustainable garden will be part of a new course at Chatham in the fall.
