KD Country: Demon House

MONONGAHELA (KDKA) ― A serpentine driveway leads through a canopy of brush to a hilltop estate that dates back more than 130 years. This is the McCue Estate, also known as the House on Emerald Hill.

"Welcome to Demon House, the only real haunted attraction in Pittsburgh." Owner Bill McCue announces his entrance by knocking three times on the big front door.

It opens wide.

"My my my! Looks like we got us some visitors." Visitors are greeted by Zederiah, a humble host in top hat and ghoulish makeup. At least, we hope it's makeup.

"Death? What do we know about death?" Zederiah thunders in a foyer filled with bones and skulls, and faded photographs of those long past.

The owner leads me through a corridor filled with gruesome ghouls and ghastly ghosts. McCue is a Hollywood filmmaker, and it shows. Raised in Brentwood, he brought his family home, and bought the aged mansion seven years ago. The Halloween haunt is the fulfillment of a childhood dream.

"Used to have the kids in the neighborhood in my mother's house downstairs in the basement," McCue said. "And I would charge them a quarter to go through my haunted house. I've always carried that dream with me."

It wasn't till after he bought the house that McCue uncovered a stunning connection. His late mother was born here before she was adopted, and never knew the place.

"This here is the original staircase of the mansion that was built in around 1913," he says, ascending the steps. At the top of the staircase, we come face to face with Rene Kruse, paranormal investigator. Her research on this house goes beyond Halloween decorations.

"Footsteps going through rooms where there's nobody in the room," she said. "There's a little girl that wanders around that surprises people. Sometimes maybe you'll call someone and they'll answer, even though they are not there. I often wonder when people come through the haunted house, how many times people actually see a ghost and they don't know it. They think it's one of the actors here."

Demon House is now in its sixth year of tours, working with a "skeleton crew.
