KD Country: Comicon Artists, Writers

MONROEVILLE (KDKA) ― Fans of fantasy gathered to gawk at their favorite characters, when Comicon made its annual appearance at the Monroeville Convention Center. They also met comic book writers and artists, who often come in pairs. Like Kevin Leen and his wife, Nora, who traveled from Detroit. He draws them and she writes them.

"My husband's been a freelance illustrator for several years," Nora said. "And I always wanted to be a writer."

Kevin's early attraction to comics came about partly because dyslexia made it difficult for him to read and write.

"I started drawing because I was inspired by these books to communicate," he said "Because my writing, most people couldn't decipher it."

"So the two of us make a pretty effective team," Nora said.

Comic book teams aren't limited to couples. And there doesn't seem to be any age limit either. Another booth features the work of sisters from Lansing, Michigan. 12-year-old Layne Toth has work in 25 comic books. Her nine-year-old sister Peri already has fourteen. But, they have two very different approaches.

"We draw nothing alike," Layne said. "She is really the creative one. I'm really working on my writing, but i just like to draw stuff."

"Mine is a lot weirder, of course," Peri said. "So I do a lot more different things."

From husband and wife to sisters, these artists are "drawn" together.
