KD Country: Sunset Hills Farm Alpacas

BUTLER (KDKA) ― Sunset Hills Farm held an event for National Alpaca Farm Day over the weekend.

Laurye Feller and her husband, David, bought four alpacas in 1997. Their careful selection of top quality alpacas from around the world established the farm as one of the nation's leaders in award-winning alpacas.

Now, their farm in Forward Township is home to 145, including newcomers.

Like their larger cousin, the llama, alpacas hail from the Andes of South America. The hills of Western Pennsylvania pose no problem to them.

The renovated farmhouse is just across from a former hay barn that was transformed into a shop called Alpaca de Moda.

Fiber shipped to spinners in Peru comes back in the form of warm, but lightweight clothing.

There's also a bed and breakfast in a stable.

If modern amenities make you forget where you are, pull back the blinds and meet your neighbors. The alpacas.

At least it's a friendly neighborhood.
