KD Country: The Great Pumpkin

NEVILLE ISLAND (KDKA) ― KDKA's Dave Crawley's search for the great pumpkin took him to the West End of Neville Island where Daniel Leon and his brother, Bill, polish the back yard behemoth behind the family's old farmhouse.

Daniel planted the pumpkin in May then added a summer's worth of care.

"Had to cover it up every day because the sun hardens it and watering every day. Weeding around and stuff," Daniel Leon said.

Of course, Neville Island detractors might argue that industrial byproducts of years gone would enable the giant jack-o-lantern to glow on its own. But that's not true

In fact, rich soil washed up by the Ohio River made this a perfect pumpkin plot. The estimated weight is nearly 700 pounds.

Daniel cut the root as the solution approaches in the form of a buggy used to carry burial vaults.

Waking up today I was just real nervous. Just looking out the window. Rain was coming down," Daniel Leon said. "All year I've been thinking about how we're going to get this pumpkin out of here. And it finally looks like we're about to do it."

Daniel's pumpkin is bound for the annual weigh-off in Salem, Ohio.
