KD Country: Carnegie Library In Carnegie

CARNEGIE (KDKA) ― The Carnegie Library of Carnegie opened its doors in 1906, but today, one of its rooms is a time capsule of America's bloodiest war.

The newly restored Civil War room opens to the public on Lincoln's birthday, Feb. 12.

The Carnegie Carnegie, as it's known, doesn't date back quite as far the Civil War, but in 1906, it became a meeting place for veterans of Captain Thomas Espy Post 153 Grand Army of the Republic.

When the last member died, the room was locked up, everything still inside, for 50 years.

Library director Diane Klinefelter said old photographs have been critical to a meticulous restoration that is almost finished.

A core sample from the wall behind a radiator revealed the original color which was unsoldier-like to say the least.

Also, stories that collected dust for more than 50 years will now see the light of day.

After the grand opening on Lincoln's birthday, the museum will open each Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
