KD Country: Gospel Singer Damara Chanel Underwood

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Damara Chanel Underwood, 16, is recording a CD at Mr. Smalls' Studio on the North Side.

The title is self-explanatory: "Old School Gospel."

She delivers "The Lord's Prayer" with a voice that spans the upper range of opera, with the intensity of soul.

"Singing gospel music, it has a message about God," she says. "And I just really like to get the message out and tell everybody about the goodness of God."

Damara has been singing for twelve of her sixteen years, first appearing publicly in her church at the age of four. She's sung in nearly a hundred churches since then.

Her credits also include charity banquets and KDKA's Children's Hospital Telethon.

Howard Underwood watches his daughter's recording session with pride.

"That's something I always wanted to do was sing," he confesses. "But I can't sing and my wife can't sing. So she was blessed from God."

The high honors student at the Pittsburgh Center for the Performing Arts intends to some day be an entertainment attorney.

As for her singing: "I plan on doing this forever."

Underwood will introduce her new CD Sunday afternoon on September 20 at Parkway Center Mall on Greentree Road.
