KD Country: The Steelers' Photographer

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― A city can never have too many Super Bowl trophies.

When the Heinz History Center unveiled the Steelers' "Six Pack," Mike Fabus got the close-up shot. But that's not unusual.

"I'm the Steelers' photographer 24/7," he said.

The man behind the camera is the star of a History Center exhibit of Steelers moments spanning three decades.

On the sidelines, behind the scenes, Fabus has taken hundreds of thousands of photographs featuring players, coaches and fans.

The future photographer got his first camera while convalescing from a massive heart attack 30 years ago. He beat the odds, learned a new art, and the Rooneys invited him to join the Steelers family.

One of his favorite shots is a close-up of Steelers great Joe Greene, during a rainy game in 1981. It was also one of his first.

"Joe Greene in the rain," he recalls. "I was in that rain also. Got knocked over. Went home to my wife. I was soaking wet. And I said 'Linda this is what I want to do for the rest of my life.'"

There are photos of players playing, praying, and having fun during practice sessions. A photo from last season depicts Hines Ward making a touchdown catch against the Jaguars on the road to trophy No. 6.

Mike Fabus received slightly smaller versions of the last two Super bowl rings.

"There's about 60 some diamonds on that ring," he says of last year's edition. "And from what I've heard, it's the most expensive Super Bowl ring that's ever been made."

The Super Bowl trophies will be on display at Heinz History Center through August 30 and the Mike Fabus photo exhibit continues through Super Bowl Sunday.

Then he hopes to return to get a close-up of trophy No. 7.
