KD Country: March Of The Penguins

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The Penguins parade through Pittsburgh was the final lap of a remarkable season. The road to the Stanley Cup was paved with a series of incredible comebacks. KDKA's Dave Crawley offers a final tribute.

The March of the Penguins

The march of the Penguins! Cheers fill the street
For a team that came back in the face of defeat.
Who could have dreamed, just four months ago,
We'd be basking again in that Stanley Cup glow?

Dan Bylsma. Dan who? With the team in tenth place,
Could a little known coach get them back in the race?
He could. And they did. With play so adroit,
The March of the Penguins wound up in Detroit.

The Red Wings again. We dropped the first two,
And Penguin fans wondered, Is this déjà vu?
Back home, they answered by winning a pair.
But a breakdown in Motown turned hope to despair.

So far they had come. So far yet to go.
Could they conquer the champions twice in a row?
They came back at home. The series was tied.
But most felt the Red Wings would not be denied.

Joe Louis Arena. An ocean of red.
Detroit faced a team that was once left for dead.
Experience once again goes against youth.
Game seven. Two teams. In a moment of truth.

Youth would strike first. Will we ever forget
How Maximum Max found the back of the net?
Then Talbot again! And the trophy yet gleams
As we dared to start dreaming those Stanley Cup dreams.

And Marian Hossa? Where to begin?
He went to the team with the best chance to win.
But think, for a moment. Examine the cost.
If Hossa stayed here, the Pens might have lost.

Joe Louis Arena was starting to rock.
Tick tick. Tick tick. Can you speed up that clock?
We lead by a goal. A clang off the post!
A shot! A save! And it's time for a toast.

Champagne on ice! On the other team's rink!
Lord Stanley's cup serves a mighty fine drink.
The March of the Penguins. And one final cheer.
Have a great summer, guys. See you next year.
