KD Country: Animal Rescue League

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Dog walking volunteer Paul Spencer of Shadyside offers encouragement as he leads an eager dog from the Animal Rescue League building on Hamilton Street.

Marilyn Stevens of Braddock Hills plays with a cat in a "get acquainted" room.

Marilyn has volunteered at the animal rescue league for 28 years. Paul, 90, has been a volunteer for five months. They share a tradition that dates back 100 years.

The Animal Rescue League is open for adoption nearly 50 hours a week, seven days a week. That's a far cry from the time when it was one hour a day, two days a week.

"When we first volunteered here there were just two staff people here," Marilyn recalls. "Things were very primitive here at that time. There was no place to walk dogs as there are now."

"It takes me out for a walk too," Paul laughs, "which is not a bad idea."
The facility is overflowing with dogs, cats and bunnies, waiting for a home.

From the days when the building was heated by a pot belly stove, the

Animal Rescue League has always had one primary mission.

"We have an open door policy here," Marilyn says. "When you see people who are so desperate, coming in and they have to let their animal go for one reason or another, they're not sent away."

Paul Spencer reaches down to pet Sidney. "You would make a wonderful pet for somebody. Yes, you would buddy."

The Animal Rescue League has been finding homes for furry friends like Sidney for 100 years.
