KD Country: The Goodie Truck

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Rain falls on a gray day in Pittsburgh. But '50s music emanating from the speaker of a little red truck on Forbes Avenue helps dispel the gloom.

Jajean Morgan and Millie Gregor are making the rounds in the Goodie Truck.

"Kind of a typical day for us because we just drive around the city," Jajean says, her hands on the wheel. "Businesses maybe give us a call ahead of time, and then we come and all their employees come out and get a midday treat."

Their truck holds dozens of "midday treats," ranging from multi-flavored popsicles to homemade chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwiches.

The technology is also an advancement from the days of the simple ice cream truck.

"We Twitter and we Facebook," Jajean says, "and we kind of let people know where we are, where we're coming, where we're going to be for how long."

They answer a 2 p.m. call in the Cultural District where customers won't settle for the ice cream truck of their childhood. The Goodie Truck is a sugar-coated smorgasbord on wheels.

It's pouring as they turn down a Squirrel Hill street. But kids waiting in line don't seem to mind.

"I would come out in the rain, snow, sleet or hail because this is the best slushy I ever had," says a wet but happy boy with an icy treat.

The two dessert servers hustle between the window and the freezer as the line surges forward.

A woman with an umbrella savors her dessert.

"On a wet dreary day in Pittsburgh there's nothing better than a Key lime pie - a taste of the tropics," she said.

The Goodie Truck gets a "tweet" from the Mod Cloth Company which means a stop in the Strip District. Break time isn't limited to vending machines any more.

Not when dessert is just a "tweet" away.
