KD Country: The Fallingwater Cookbook

MILL RUN (KDKA) ― The architectural masterpiece called Fallingwater lures visitors worldwide to the Fayette County community of Mill Run.

Pittsburgh department store magnate Edgar Kaufmann commissioned the family getaway, whose cantilevered decks seem to soar over the splashing waters of Bear Run.

But the family cook, Elsie Henderson, wasn't so sure about the place when she first stopped there.

"When I first came here I thought this was the weirdest place I had ever been in," she says.

But she learned to love it. She was the Fallingwater cook from 1947 to 1964 when the property was deeded to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy.

Spry and alert at the age of 96, she fondly remembers Edgar and Lillian Kaufmann and their son, Edgar Jr.

"They said they considered us family," she says of the family's relationship to the staff.

From the Frigidaire refrigerator to the antique stove, the kitchen is almost as she left it. And the recipes aren't forgotten.

Henderson teamed up with food critic Suzanne Martinson to compile a cookbook that has turned out to be a top seller.

The co-authors will sign copies of "The Fallingwater Cookbook" at Fallingwater on Sunday, September 13th from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.
