KD Country: Remembering 'Red' Hare

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― It was a cold day in January on a windswept bluff overlooking Pittsburgh, but photographer Clyde Hare was undeterred.

His trusty old camera snapped yet another picture of the city he loved.

Clyde Hare passed away Wednesday afternoon at the age of 82, but his legacy will live in photographs.

"Pittsburgh in the 1950s was really a city on the make and on the go," he recalled in a 2006 interview.

The man from Bloomington, Indiana, came to Pittsburgh with a team of photographers to witness a Renaissance - a city in transition.

"We were tearing the city apart and putting it back together," said the man known to friends as "Red." "And 37 steel mills were working."

No one captured the gritty essence of those mills like "Red" Hare.  Decades of photographic images filled the pages of a 1994 book called "Clyde Hare's Pittsburgh."

"I'd wanted to do a book basically for my kids so that they would be able to see steel making the way I knew it, would be able to see the city the way I'd known it when I came in."

He succeeded. His books and photographs are a lasting gift to his wife Pat and three sons. One of those sons, Jerry Hare, carries on his father's work.

"Red" Hare created numerous photographic essays for National Geographic and other publications which took him from remote regions of Alaska to the hills of western Pennsylvania. - more than a million photographs.

"The world's still out there waiting to be photographed," he once said. He answered that need as well as anyone could.

A memorial service for Clyde Hare will take place at 11 a.m., Monday, October 19 at Parkwood United Presbyterian Church, 4289 Mount Royal Blvd. in Hampton.
