Local Football Teams Eye State Championship Titles

BETHEL PARK (KDKA) ― Three local high school football teams made it to the state championship game in Hershey, and for their hometowns, the accomplishment brings plenty of pride.

"This is historic," says Debra Masley, from the Clairton School District. "They've never been able to get this far before and for this school, this means everything, sports are so important to these kids down here."

Unfortunately, Single A Clairton fell short against Steelton-Highspire in Hershey, 35-16.

But while Clairton was on the field, parents for Thomas Jefferson were getting ready to make the trip.

The school is hoping for a repeat state championship title.

"I mean everybody's clicking," says Coach Don German. "Defense is awesome – everything's working for them."

On the bus, confidence was abundant.

"I think that TJ is the No. 1 team and they're going to win," says fan Kyle Senich.

The Bethel Park Hawks are also on their way to Hershey.

"We just have to go out and play our best," says LB Mitch Hakeem. "They're bigger than us but we have the speed advantage so we're just going to play our best."

Head Coach Jeff Metheny is proud of how far his team has come.

"You've got to be kidding me. If you would have said at the beginning of the year that we could do this, but these kids are really resilient, they got some great coaches coaching them everyday and we got a heavy belief that we're going to play well in this game," he said.
