HS Football Player of the Year

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― KDKA, Pizza Hut and the Steelers have teamed up to recognize the top high school football players this season. 
Throughout the regular high school football season, you've helped us recognize the top players of the week; now you've helped us name the Pizza Hut High School Player of the Year!  

One lucky player will be honored during halftime of the Steelers/Ravens game on December 27th and receive a $1,500 donation to his school's athletic department from Pizza Hut!

Pizza Hut High School Player Of The Week Winners:
After each week of the regular season, the KDKA Sports Team nominated three players based on their performance on the gridiron, then viewers helped us pick the Player of the Week with online and text voting!  

Here's a look back at this season's standouts who were in the running. 

The voting is now closed.  The winner will be announced during the December 27th Steelers game!

WEEK 1 WINNER: DAVID MILLER
Running Back from Greensburg Central Catholic
Game Stats: 23 carries, 234 yards, 2 TDs to lead GCC to the 31-7 win over Charleroi. It was his first game since the first round of last year's playoffs when he suffered a season-ending dislocated right knee and MCL sprain.

WEEK 2 WINNER: DAMION JONES-MOORE
Running Back from Central Catholic High School
Game Stats: 28 carries, 258 yards rushing, 2 TD's

WEEK 3 WINNER:  CHRISTIAN BRUMBAUGH
Quarterback from South Fayette
Game Stats: 16 of 25, 200 yards, 3 TD in upset win over Keystone Oaks

WEEK 4 WINNER: ERIC SHAFFER
Quarterback from Latrobe
Game Stats: 9 for 10 passing, 171 yards, 3 passing TDs, 1 rushing TD in win over Connellsville

WEEK 5 WINNER:  QUENTIN BRIGGS
Running Back From Charleroi
Game Stats: 32 carries, 193 yards, 2 TD in Charleroi's 26-20 upset win at Jeannette

WEEK 6 WINNER:  SHAYNE DOTSON
Running Back From South Park
Game Stats:  264 yards rushing, 1 TD

WEEK 7 WINNER:  DARIEN ROBINSON
Running Back From McKeesport
Game Stats:  245 Yds Rush, 2 TDs in win over Norwin

WEEK 8 WINNER:  RYAN ROSS
Wide Receiver from South Fayette
Game Stats: 8 catches, 108 yards in win over Steel Valley

WEEK 9 WINNER:  ROSS HARMON
Quarterback From Kittanning
Game Stats: 9 of 15, 151 yards passing, 2 TD passes, 1 TD run, scored winning two-point conversion in overtime to lead Kittanning to the playoffs with a 23-22 win over rival Ford City

Congratulations To All Off This Season's Nominees:
Even though these high school athletes didn't get enough votes to become the Player of the Week, we'd like to congratulate all of our weekly nominees for their great gridiron performances:

  • Week 1 Honorable Mention:  Wayne Capers Jr. (Chartiers Valley QB): 8-of-12, 216 yards, 2 TD passes including the game-winner with :21 left to beat West Allegheny 28-24 
  • Week 1 Honorable Mention:  Greg McGhee (Perry Traditional Academy QB): 14 carries, 146 yards from the QB position to lead Perry to 7-0 win over Brashear. The win ended Brashear's 20-game City League winning streak. It was a match-up of the top two teams in the City League
  • Week 2 Honorable Mention: John Matarazzo (New Castle QB): 15 of 20, 368 yards passing, 4 TDs
  • Week 2 Honorable Mention: Rushel Shell (Hopewell RB): 24 carries, 171 yards, 4 rushing TDs
  • Week 3 Honorable Mention: Justin Fleo (New Castle RB): Set the all-time single-game rushing record at New Castle with 276 yards
  • Week 3 Honorable Mention: Cody Cook (Beaver Falls RB): 37 carries for 211 yards to lead Beaver Falls over arch-rival Aliquippa
  • Week 4 Honorable Mention: Shayne Dotson (South Park RB):  265 yards rushing, 2 TD in win over Cornell
  • Week 4 Honorable Mention: Jim Giansante (Thomas Jefferson WR): 7 catches, 174 yards, 1 TD in win over Ringgold
  • Week 5 Honorable Mention: Dom Timbers (Woodland Hills RB): 26 carries, 161 yards, 3 TD in a 27-3 win over Central Catholic
  • Week 5 Honorable Mention: Brian Shemenski (Springdale QB/DB): Scored the eventual winning touchdown, then with 1:57 left in the game, broke up a two-point conversion pass to seal the Dynamos 7-6 upset win at Avonworth
  • Week 6 Honorable Mention: Rushel Shell (Hopewell RB):  264 yards rushing and 5 TD
  • Week 6 Honorable Mention: Paul Jones (Sto-Rox QB):  Game Stats: 15 of 28, 234 yards, 3 TDs
  • Week 7 Honorable Mention:Rushel Shell (Hopewell RB): 349 Yds Rush, 3 TD in win over West Allegheny
  • Week 7 Honorable Mention: Rob Kalkstein (Gateway QB): 228 Yds Pass, 3 TDs in win over Erie McDowell
  • Week 8 Honorable Mention: Bryce Ansell (Mount Pleasant RB): 176 yards rushing, 1 TD as Mount Pleasant clinched the Interstate Conference title with a 13-0 win over Jeannette
  • Week 8 Honorable Mention: Matt McCann (Keystone Oaks RB): 25 carries, 272 yards, and scored the winning TD vs. Sto-Rox
  • Week 9 Honorable Mention: Rushel Shell (Hopewell RB): 20 carries, 288 yards, 2 TD in win over Moon. Finished the regular season with 2,043 yards rushing.
  • Week 9 Honorable Mention: Austin Hancock (Peters Twp QB): 10-of-13, 220 yards passing, 2 passing TDs., 2 rushing TDs, and returned an interception 84 yards for another TD on defense to lead Peters Township over Canon-McMillan
