Local Families Welcome New Year's Babies

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Along with black-eyed peas, fireworks, cabbage, roast pork and resolutions - we have had the tradition of celebrating the first baby born after midnight on New Year's Eve.

It dates back to the ancient Greeks in 600 B.C. as a symbol of rebirth.

Suited up in a Steeler "onsie," Michael Elias Satler, all 8 pounds,13 ounces of him arrived exactly two minutes into the 2009 at Magee-Womens Hospital.

"It was happening really quickly...and we're like is it going to be '08 or '09...'08 or '09!!!," Jessica, Michael's mom, said.

Michael was due Christmas Eve. The Satler family - Mom Jessica, Dad David, and big brother J.D., age 5 of Brentwood - were sent home three times with false alarms until yesterday, "Obviously, we're just grateful that he's happy and healthy."

And in Bloomfield, at West Penn Hospital, the first little girl made her appearance at 12:45AM. Deyona Nicole Cain was born weighing in at 6 pounds, 3 ounces.

The Cain family of Stanton Heights, along with Deyon's 6-year-old sister, Desiree, we're all actually there for the big event. "After she came out, she was singing her A-B-C's to her and counting her fingers and toes, " says their mom, Danielle, laughing.

Both the Cain and Satler families are looking forward to the New Year with the gifts that keep on giving. "It's just so amazing - there's nothing that I would trade her for," Danielle said.
