3rd Grader Helps Raise Money For Turkey Fund

JEFFERSON HILLS (KDKA) ― Time is running out to donate to the KD Turkey Fund, but a group of students wanted to make sure it was doing its part.

Students at Gill Hall Elementary School in the Jefferson Hills spent the last few weeks collecting cash for those less fortunate.

It wasn't a teacher or principal who came up with the idea. It was the big idea of a 3rd grader with a big heart.

Jenna Herazo and her mother were watching the KDKA TV news when Jenna saw a promotion for the KD Turkey Fund.

"I asked my mom what the turkey fund was and she told me. So I asked if I could raise money for it," said Jenna Herazo.

Jenna's parents were touched and impressed by their little girl with a grown up idea. They also wanted Jenna to take ownership of the process.

"We said if you're going to do this, then you have to go to the principal yourself. It took about three days to get the courage up," said Al Herazo.

The principal wasted no time and jumped into action. She helped Jenna craft a letter that went home with each student.

Each classroom was set up with collection bins and it wasn't long before the Gill Hall Elementary collected $1,000 for families who can't afford a Thanksgiving dinner.

Together, with KDKA's Keith Jones, Jenna announced to her classmates the school had collected $1,000.

Keith also informed them National City Bank matched the $1,000 for a grand total of $2,000.

The attention Jenna helped claim for her school quickly made her a popular student and lent evidence that one little girl can make a difference.
