Ham and mashed potatoes were on the menu Tuesday at the Jubilee Kitchen in the lower Hill.
But the real treat comes Thursday with turkeys, stuffing and lots of dessert.
"It's great a place to fall back on and that because really I don't have any family left," Jeff Phillips said.
Sister Ligouri Rossner expects to feed about 150 people, including women and children on Thanksgiving, but she's worried because donations are down and demand keeps rising.
"People who need food who normally were making it their whole life," she said. "So it's really sad. We're seeing a different layer of people."
Meanwhile, the Light of Life Rescue Mission is well-stocked with 130 turkeys, hundreds of pounds of candied yams, stuffing and desserts to feed 1,000 people.
About 300 of those meals will be delivered to senior citizens.
"There's always a great need in this community so we always have a lot people coming here every single day of the year for food and for hope - for hope to change their lives," Beth Healey said.
At Ms. Jean's Southern Cuisine on Penn Avenue in Wilkinsburg, the sweet potato pies were coming out of the oven while the zucchini pies were going in.
"It just makes it really nice when I see someone come in and bring the whole family with their kids also that just don't have anywhere to go," Jean Gould, owner, said.
She says free dinners are her way of saying thanks and giving back to a community that has given her so much.
