First Night revelers welcomed 2009 with fireworks in downtown Pittsburgh. Despite the cold, thousands of people came into the city to celebrate the coming of the New Year.
The fun began with fireworks and with more than 100 activities going on, revelers had plenty to do.
For some people, it's an annual tradition.
"The kids love to come down here," says Patty Medoski. "We've been out here - I think this is our fifth or sixth year no matter what it is, the weather, we come down rainy or sunny or whatever it is.
"They just love the fireworks, they love all the different venues, they always like making things - just love it," she added.
Entertaining the crowd before the raising of the ball were the Fabulous Thunderbirds - and they're no strangers to Pittsburgh.
The group says the city feels a lot like home.
"We talked about even moving here because we love it so much," says Kim Wilson, the lead singer. "[We've] got a lot of friends in Pittsburgh and a big history, a big history between myself and this city."
This year's First Night was extra special. It was the culmination of the city's 250th birthday celebration and it marked the beginning of the 25th anniversary of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.
