Community Speaks Out On Closure Of UPMC Braddock

BRADDOCK (KDKA) ― Community members packed a meeting about the closure of UPMC Braddock.

Braddock Mayor John Fetterman said he didn't want to give anyone false hope about the hospital remaining open.

Cindy Dorando, chief executive officer of the hospital, explained how the numbers of patients and dollars have dwindled since UPMC took over the hospital in 1996.

"You've seen the statistics – four out of five area residents use other facilities and not UPMC Braddock, so my focus in the short-term is really to talk to you about how we got here," she said, "and really thinking about the one in five patients in the area that use UPMC Braddock and we'll look at their health care services in the future."

The crowd was focused on the elderly.

"These residents of this community should have been told something way ahead time, we should have been told something so we could prepare the residents," Ella Jones, a borough administrator, said.

"Whoever made these decisions – I want to know why when things started declining why wouldn't they let council know, we can have a meeting, find out what the problem was, why it's declining, but nobody ever said anything about that," Nicki Jones, from Braddock, said.

Fetterman is asking UPMC about expanding the Pittsburgh Promise to students in the Woodland Hills School District.

There has been no firm commitment from UPMC on that proposal.
