Skin Care Trend Shows Women Going Organic

(KDKA) Skin care is a part of every woman's daily routine, and some say when it comes to what you put on your face, going organic is worth a try.

The organic beauty boom proves that being green goes beyond taking care of the environment. It's also about taking care of yourself.

A report released by the Environmental Working Group in September shows that cosmetic chemicals are making their way into young girls' systems and affecting hormone balance.

Experts say the chemicals were found in all 20 of the girls tested.

Dr. Laura Ferris, of UPMC, says that the study is not conclusive, but definitely something to keep an eye on.

"We need to look specifically at what happens in the doses in the body and are they causing cancer, doing long term damage," says Dr. Ferris.

She says some of her patients are going for green, too. But don't be fooled by labels, just because it's organic, doesn't mean it's good for everyone, adds Dr. Ferris.

"Just because it's organic doesn't mean it's non-allergenic. Sometimes people who have problems with a rash seek out all-natural thinking they're avoiding it, when they could be making it worse in some cases," Dr. Ferris says.

But study or no study, consumer interest drives trends and if the growing number of organic beauty websites is any indication, the green beauty trend is only growing.

Erinn Thompson's Bloom Organic Skin Care Parlor in Lawrenceville is local evidence of that.

"I've seen amazing results with my own skin, as well as my clients," says Thompson. "They're health conscious, they exercise or do yoga, they're trying to find a healthier lifestyle."
