Unemployed Facing End Of COBRA Discount
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
For many people who are unemployed, health insurance benefits are coming to an end.
The COBRA program lets workers keep their company's health insurance plan after they leave their job.
With the economy tanking last winter, the government cut COBRA rates dramatically, but the discount only lasted nine months.
Now, many people still out of work are looking at a significant jump in costs.
"There's some testing that I'm going to need and my husband's going to need next month - routine, but for a purpose," Diane Feick, of McKeesport, said. "If you don't have insurance there's no way you can afford to have it done."
An advocacy group, Families USA, says unemployed families could see their premiums increase from around $400 a month to $1,100.
