West Virginia Ranks No. 1 In Sleeplessness

WHEELING, W. Va. (KDKA) ― A new government study found that when it comes to sleeplessness, West Virginia ranks No. 1.

Experts explaining the study have pointed to health issues.

"West Virginia does have higher obesity rates, higher smoking rates – all of these things lead to chronic medical illnesses - people with chronic illnesses we know don't sleep as well," Dr. Christian Sonnefeld, from Wheeling Hospital Sleep Lab, said.

Others have mentioned that odd work shifts may be more common in West Virginia.

Jane Beatty mentioned another factor.

"A lot of it I think is stress," she said.

But not everyone in West Virginia is sleepless. In fact, despite the study's results, some people have no problem getting shut-eye.

"I sleep pretty good," one woman noted.

Dr. Sonnefeld thinks more research is needed.
