CDC Launches Education Campaign On MRSA

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― It's a brand new school year and already three different schools across the Pittsburgh area have sent letters to parents and conducted school cleanings because of the bacteria MRSA.

At the same time, the Centers for Disease Control is launching a national campaign to teach parents how to protect their children.

The CDC will use websites, fact sheets, brochures, posters, blogs and radio to spread the word. You may also hear information at school, professional organizations and faith-based groups.

The key message is what to look for and what to do. Most of the MRSA infections in the community are skin infections. Keeping wounds covered and washing hands go a long way in prevention.

Fumigating classrooms and shutting down sports events are pretty much overkill when those are not the warm, wet, natural places to find MRSA. It makes more sense to wash towels and wipe down bathrooms.

And while MRSA sounds scary, keep in mind the resistance is to just one class of antibiotics. If necessary, there are lots of other types of effective antibiotics to choose from.
