The Flat Belly Diet is one of the hottest diets around. And no wonder -- who doesn't want a flat belly?
Back in May, KDKA's Kristine Sorensen asked three local women to put the diet to the test to find out if it really works.
While one of the women decided she didn't like the food on the diet and dropped out, the other two followed the eating plan for a month and experienced success. One of them, Sandy Holmes, lost seven pounds and two inches around her waist. Her husband John, who decided to try the diet with her, lost 11 pounds.
We wondered if the couple was able to stay on the diet long-term, and whether they've lost more weight, so recently Kristine stopped by for a visit.
She found that, since May, Sandy has lost another eight pounds on the Flat Belly Diet, and John has lost another five.
Sandy says it hasn't always been easy, "There were quite a few times I thought I would give up because I didn't like feeling hungry at first, and there were some changes with the food that I wasn't used to. But I kept telling myself no, you're doing this for the right reasons."
Sandy says the diet has gotten easier the longer she's been on it, and now it's become more of a lifestyle change for the couple.
The diet requires eating 1,600 calories a day, and eating a meal four times a day or about every four hours. It calls for eating a mono-unsaturated fat (MUFA) with every meal, including nuts, seeds, olives and olive oil, pesto, avocados and even chocolate.
The co-author of the diet, Cynthia Sass, say it's based on scientific research, "When I went in to the research and I found that there were these specific types of helpful fats that could actually reduce belly fat, it was like a miracle and I knew that was going to be the crux of the Flat Belly Diet."
For Sandy Holmes, the miracle of the Flat Belly Diet is how it has indeed taken inches off her middle, a total of four inches to be exact.
She's gone down a dress size, and no longer has to shop in the plus-sized women's departments.
"It's been a long time since I could shop in the regular department," she said.
Right now, the Flat Belly Diet book is only available for purchase online, through Prevention Magazine.
