Residents Urged To "Go Green" Under New Program

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Pittsburgh is taking great steps to cut global warming.

Local leaders launched a new initiative today which is the first of its kind, to run a citywide citizen action campaign for the environment.

The plan is to get the community, government and businesses all on the same "green" page.

Mathew Mehalik with Sustainable Pittsburgh says the business community has already started the effort with carbon dioxide reduction.

"The good thing about CO-2 reduction is quite often it goes hand in hand with energy savings," said Mehalik. "And that's a cost savings."

The goal is to get Pittsburgh to reduce its greenhouse emissions by 20 percent by the year 2023.

All of the major colleges and universities in Pittsburgh are already on board.

Now, the real challenge is the community.

That's what Joylette Portlock is charged with -- getting everyone in the region to comply.

Each month Pittsburgh Climate Initiative will offer one action everyone can take to reduce emissions.

"That's the action item for March," said Portlock. "Change an incandescent light bulb to a florescent. People will do that action hopefully. And then go to our website and report that they did it and track their progress all year long."

A monthly action item will vary from changing one light bulb, setting your water heater to 120 degrees, checking tire pressure or turning down the thermostat at least two degrees.
