Bike Businesses Bring Pedal Power To Pittsburgh

SOUTH SIDE (KDKA) ― With warm summer weather here for the weekend, Pittsburghers are breaking out their bikes, especially on the South Side where construction and congestion are making it tough to get around.

Two new businesses are capitalizing on this bike boom: Green Gears Pedicabs and Over the Bar Bicycle Café.

"We're one block off the trail head to the Great Allegheny Passage which is the Pittsburgh to DC trail. REI is right here which is a great partner, and Bike Pittsburgh is here on the South Side," says Over the Bar Owner, Michael Kotyk.

But this movement isn't just about biking or being eco friendly – it's also a great solution to the city's parking crunch.

"We'd love to be the first business in the city to have dedicated bike parking which means our parallel spot out front would be permanently blocked off and have bike racks instead of a car space," Mike adds.  "I've told the mayor over email that if he gives us a bike space we'll call it Cycle Stahl after him."

But if you don't feel like riding your own bike or taking your car, Paul Kletter's Green Gears Pedicabs are a brand new travel option.

"There's no better way to travel throughout the city. You don't have to deal with parking. You don't have to deal with paying for gas," Kletter says.

In fact Green Gears will do everything from a romantic tour of the city to pick up and drop off for the Steelers, Pens and Pirates games.

"We service the South Side, North Shore, Downtown, Strip District, Lower Lawrenceville, and also up into Oakland and Shadyside," Kletter adds.

Pedicabs are available by phone at 412-343-PEDI, on the web at www.greengearspedicabs.com or feel free to hail one on the street.

Over the Bar Bicycle Café is located at 2518 E. Carson St. on the South Side.  The phone number is 412-381-3698 or visit www.otbbicyclecafe.com.
