New Additions Show Off City's Green Initiatives

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― There are two new additions to downtown Pittsburgh this week just in time for the G-20 Summit.

Both are helping to show off how "green" of a city Pittsburgh has become.

Nestled between the skyscrapers of downtown Pittsburgh is the newest green space, the PNC Triangle Park, located at the corner of Liberty Avenue and Fifth Avenue.

"It's beautiful, and there's places for people to sit," said Martha LaBelle, who was enjoying the park today. "I love it."

There's also an overhang made with stainless steel from recycled metal and LED lights that use less energy.

The park has an irrigation system to get the plants started. Eventually, though, they are going to turn that off and let Mother Nature take care of the process.

Caretakers even plan on using an old-fashioned push mower to cut the grass to keep from polluting the air.

Next to the park is PNC Three, which is the newest green building downtown and on the other side of that. The PNC Living Green Wall is six-stories high and made up of 600 hundred squares of plants.

The wall actually makes up for the carbon footprint of one person. So, the wall in total would actually make up for the carbon footprint of 600 people.
