Group Seeks Help To Clean City For G-20 Summit

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Cleaning up trash around the region is just one priority for groups getting ready for the G-20 Summit later this month.

Now, they are looking for help.

As Pittsburgh races to put on its cleanest face for the G-20 Summit, Boris Weinstein, the city's "self-appointed Litter Czar," and other officials are looking for some help along the way.

"The county thought originally it needed 175 to 350," said Weinstein. "As it stands right now, we have 600 volunteers."

With the G-20 obviously not exactly an event for widespread public involvement, the Pittsburgh G-20 Partnership is hoping to get Pittsburghers on board with a one-day shot to pick up litter around town.

"This is that one opportunity to be involved, help the city shine and do your part," said Robert Petrilli, of the Pittsburgh G-20 Partnership.

They will be doing it with a handful of local students interested in helping Pittsburgh go green.

"Sustainability is the issue of our time and I think students are really engaged in that and eager to serve their community around the issue," said student Miriam Parson.

Officials say the clean-up won't just concentrate around downtown or any of the places delegates might congregate.

Instead, they are also going to stick to the main routes in and out of the airport.

While volunteers are aplenty for downtown and other suburban sites, officials say there's still a need for some help along West Liberty Avenue and other major roads.
