Pittsburgh Goes Dark During Earth Hour

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― From Pittsburgh to Las Vegas to Paris to Sydney, Australia, people all over the world turned off lights for one hour on Saturday from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. to mark "Earth Hour."

It's a part of a global call to cut energy use and highlight the danger of climate change.

The Highmark sign and the lights atop Fifth Avenue Place went dark, as did the UPMC sign on the tallest building in Pittsburgh.

City Councilman Bill Peduto says 16 institutions agreed to dim their lights and he also encouraged people at home to take part.

"The goal this year is not just to turn off our icons, but to get it so people can understand that they can make a difference in changing this world," said Peduto. "I'm hoping that people do understand that together, the issue of climate control is a global issue. We have the ability by ourselves, by individuals to make a difference."

And it wasn't just in Pittsburgh.

Landmarks like the Empire State Building in New York and the Las Vegas Strip went dark.

It was also lights out at the famous opera house in Sydney, Australia.

"Earth Hour" began three years ago in Sydney, organized by the World Wildlife Fund.

It's estimated 4,000 cities and towns in 88 countries participated this year.
