Mama Malkin's Borscht Recipe Big Hit On South Side

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The 17th Street Cafe on the South Side is known for its delicious soups, but this week it's all about the borscht.

Borscht is a russian soup that Evgeni Malkin's mom makes for him before every game. It's made from beats, potatoes, cabbage and meat.

Patrick Joyce, owner of the 17th Street Cafe, began making the soup last weekend. He handed it out to fans outside Mellon Arena before Monday night's victory in Game 6.

He says he's made about 18 gallons so far and plans to make another 15 gallons before the big game on Friday.

Joyce says he hopes the soup will create excitement among fans. He's giving it away to all customers who come in for a meal before Friday's game.

He's also making a challenge to Penguin fans- if you get him a ticket to the game, he'll come with you to Detroit and make Mama Malkin's lucky borscht soup for your tailgate party.
