Tips For Keeping Pets Safe During Fireworks
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
While the Fourth of July is a time for many people to enjoy fireworks, it can be a scary time for their pets.
Veterinarians say to try and keep your cat or dog distracted if they get scared by the noise of fireworks.
"The best advice is to keep pets indoors if you can during these times, especially small pets, and keep them distracted," said veterinarian, Dr. Mike Hutchinson.
He recommends turning up the television or radio to try and help.
But if that doesn't seem to work he also recommends talking to your vet about other alternatives, like natural remedies.
"If they're really crazy, you may want to speak to your veterinarian about a tranquilizer," said Dr. Hutchinson.
He says if you can't bring your pet indoors and they are leashed outside, it's a good idea to keep a close eye on them in case they find a way to get loose or even because of choking hazards.
"Especially fenced in pets, you have to be careful, even if they are tethered up," he said. "Sometimes they'll jump the fences and they'll escape because they get so nervous and we have to worry about choking hazards. If they jump and get a collar caught they can choke. Fireworks will make them do unusual things that we don't normally see dogs do."
He also suggests double checking that your pet's identification tags are on and he also recommends against taking your pet to fireworks shows.
