River Becomes Watery Playground During Regatta

Independence Day is a time for family, friends and fireworks but in Pittsburgh that's not enough because it's also a day for the Three Rivers Regatta.
It happens every Fourth of July weekend; the Allegheny River becomes a playground for all kinds of watercraft events during the annual regatta.
Some brave boaters competed in the Anything That Floats Race.
Still celebrating the Pittsburgh Penguins championship last month, one group took to the waters in something that resembles the Stanley Cup.
"It's actually a precise scale replica of the Stanley Cup," said participant, Alex Wusyoko. "All of the proportions are exact."
But the Three Rivers Regatta is not just for amateurs, the pros also came to the town for the annual powerboat races.
Twenty-four high-tech, Formula 3 speed boats competed in timed trials. Some of the world's top drivers skimmed the surface of the Allegheny at high speeds.
"I really like racing right downtown with a big city right in the middle of it, usually we race in an open location this is right here in the city," said one race participant.
The big crowds also enjoyed foods of all different types as well as concerts and other various interactive activities.
But it's all in anticipation for the big fireworks show this evening.
The company "Pyrotechnico" will launch 22,000 of them over the city tonight in celebration of July 4th.
The show begins at 9:30 p.m. and is expected to last about 30 minutes.
