77 Digital Cameras Put To Test

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― If you're in the market for a new digital camera, Consumer Reports put some of the most popular models to the test.

Digital cameras have come down in price and gone up in quality since the last time Consumer Reports tested them. Recently, they decided to check out the newer models to see how they stack up in terms of picture quality, features and durability.

Consumer Reports put some digital cameras through a tough test. One camera, the Olympus Stylus Tough 6000, claims it's even "shockproof up to five feet." Testers dropped the camera that distance a few times onto a concrete floor to test it.

"The Tough 6000 still worked. Now we don't know how it would do in lots of falls or harder falls, but if you're clumsy you may want to consider it," Elias Arias from Consumer Reports said.

The Olympus is just one of 77 digital cameras Consumer Reports tested. They tested everything from subcompacts and compacts to superzooms and single lens reflex (SLR) that allow you to see the exact picture you're taking.

What's new? Some cameras now make it easier to wirelessly transfer photos or video directly to your computer.

"We were pleasantly surprised to find that several of the point and shoots did rather well in low light without a flash. And that's not the case with most point and shoots," Arias said.

A child's birthday party is a classic challenge. Testers took photos of a standard test chart to help determine low-light capability without a flash. When all the tests were done, the Nikon Cooplix 2-610 had the best low-light performance of point and shoots. It's a subcompact so it's portable and costs $220.

However, if low-light shooting isn't a priority, consider the Canon PowerShot A590 IS. It's a compact so it offers long battery life and it's a best buy you can purchase online for $110.

The best buy in super zooms is the Canon PowerShot SX110 IS, for $210.

Consumer Reports also found a camera with improved wireless capability so you can download pictures and video directly to your computer. It's the Sony CyberShotl DSC-G3 for $500.
