Consumer Reports Survey Offers Weight Loss Secrets

(KDKA) Two out of three American adults are overweight.

We gain an average 20 pounds between the ages of 25 and 55. But some people are able to take the weight off and keep it off.

Consumer Reports surveyed 21,000 of its readers to find their secrets.

Diane Lobel is one of them. She lost 40 pounds and has kept it off for three years.

"The doctor is even happy," said Lobel. "He thought I was a completely different patient. He had to check his records to make sure it was me."

Jamie Kopf Hirsh, of Consumer Reports, says the survey found that most of the successful dieters lost their weight without the help of a formal diet program, diet pills or a medical procedure.

Their strategies were similar to those of naturally thin people who were surveyed, and included the obvious like exercising, eating lots of fruits and vegetables, opting for whole wheat bread and other whole grains rather than white flour and limiting fat.

Lobel says her other secret weapon is portion control.

"Portion control is a given," she said. "I have to make sure I don't go overboard on anything that I eat."

Even the naturally thin people in the survey said they had to watch what they eat.

"People wh have always been thin typically aren't sitting around eating potato chips," said Consumer Reports' Hirsh. "Only three percent of the thin people we surveyed said they ate whatever they pleased and never exercised."

Consumer Reports' survey also found those who weigh less eat out less, so eating home-cooked meals can be a good strategy, and can save you money, too.

Consumer Reports has come up with tips for cooking healthy meals on a budget.
