Tips To Save Big On Your Summer Vacation

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Summertime is just around the corner and that means it's time to get away for a vacation.

But sometimes it is tough financially to get away.

"Go to sites like Hotwire.com, look at the city you like, you can select the star level, like a four star or three star, and you can select the part of the city you want to be in," said Nelson. "But you can't select the exact hotel, by doing that you can save a lot of money."

She says she found a four star hotel for $79, instead of $188 a night, which is a savings of 58 percent. If you're in the mood to gamble, Nelson says Priceline can be fun and profitable.

"You kind of look at what the going rate is," said Nelson. "My rule of thumb is you divide it in half. I take 50 percent off and make that my bid and you can get really good deals if you are ready to roll the dice."

However, there is a down side to Priceline and Hotwire.

By using a deal on one of these websites, you're stuck with it because they are non-refundable.

So for more flexibility, Nelson says go to Entertainment.com and buy an entertainment book for your destination city.

"They are on sale for $9.99. They are usually $35 or $45 bucks, but if you are going to a city for a few days, you're going to get a lot of coupons for restaurants, casual buy one get one frees, and a lot of coupons for the museums and attractions for those cities," adds Nelson.

Nelson also advises to look for a hotel that offers free breakfast because for a family of four that makes a big difference.
