Space Bags: Do They Really Do That?

You've seen those space bags for storage on television… but are they truly a space saver or just a money waster?KDKA Consumer Editor Yvonne Zanos putting those space bags to the test.
The space bag promises to triple your storage space.
Camille Mann agreed to help us find out.
She admits her stuff is out of control.
Mann was willing to pack her stuff away if the space bag works.
"It's a really good idea," said Mann. "It would be helpful."
Mann stuffed the bag with cloths and then sealed it with its zipper but the zipper came off.
It takes some doing but we get the zipper back on and the bag sealed.
The directions say to suck the air out of the space bag by using a vacuum hose and it works at first and then a hissing noise.
Almost as fast as the bag shriveled up, it puffed out.
We paid $6.99 for a storage bag that lasted less than thirty seconds.
But we tried to salvage our space bag.
But again the plastic breaks -- this time at another spot.
"It is disappointing," said Mann. "That it has a hole and we tried twice even after taping it and it didn't work."
To be fair, we went out and bought another one to try it again and this time we have better results.
The zipper does not zip off and the bag does not leak at least not right away.
But the whole space bag thing is now just a bit too iffy for Mann who says she'll stick with her bins and boxes.
So, we're giving the space bag a thumbs down.
KDKA checked comments from people who have tried to use them.
It seems like there's a 50 percent chance that it won't have a hole.
The best advice here is if you want to try it do not order it from television or over the internet.
There's a good chance you'll have to exchange it or return.
So try stores close to home with return policies you can count on.
