When natural gas prices were climbing, gas experts pointed to the price of oil and told us the two are connected.
Now that oil prices have plunged, why not natural gas prices too?
As of January 1, Equitable, Columbia and Dominion Peoples Gas did lower the price of natural gas about 10 percent. The question is why not more?
In July, we were paying $4.11 a gallon for gasoline. Today, it's about $1.70. In July, oil cost $1.47 a barrel and today it's $47 a barrel.
In July, natural gas prices at the well cost between $12 and $13 per MCF. Today it costs between $5 and $6 per MCF.
Pennsylvania Consumer Advocate Sonny Popowsky says natural gas prices have turned upside down.
"Natural gas prices have traditionally low in the summer, high in the winter but this year it has been just the opposite," he said.
So why not drastic drops in natural gas prices?
"Over the last six months, we have seen a substantial decline in natural gas prices and [it is] starting to be reflected in gas prices this winter. We are seeing reductions in each of our gas utilities. Reductions should be reflected over the next year."
So everyone should see savings down the road. If you haven't picked a gas supplier, this is not the time.
