(KDKA) One woman says it is possible to get a price break on the things that you buy, and all you have to do is ask for it.

Teri Gault makes a living helping others save money on her websites: TeriToday.com and TheGroceryGame.com.

Gault says she has easily saved thousands of dollars by following one simple rule: Always ask for a discount.

She says consumers shouldn't be embarrassed to ask because you never know what is available unless you do.

Gault says she saved on a $35 t-shirt at Macy's in New York because they have a policy of giving visitors discounts of 11 percent.

But on big ticket items, Gault says she will ask for a manager, which in one case got her $10 off a Nikon camera, plus 25 percent off its accessories.

"So I walked out saving myself around $40," says Gault.

Meanwhile, Gault says a little haggling on a sweater that was missing its belt meant a savings of 25 percent or $33.

Gault paid a visit to Robinson Towne Center where she tried her best at Value City, but she got a thumbs down. Then, went onto Sally's Beauty Supply, but again she found no discounts.

Gault says she is the first to admit that haggling doesn't always work.

But when she heads into a party supply store, she comes out with an armful of party warming dishes. Gault says always asks for a discount when buying multiples.

"At first we were told no. Then, the manager was there and said, 'I can give you 25 percent off if you are buying five.' So hey, I saved $12.99."

Also, Gault says she always suggests using Internet prices as leverage to get a price reduction.

At Best Buy, Gault says they matched the best price that she had found online for a Garmin GPS. Best Buy's price was $449.

"It was $449. I showed them my print-out from my website TeriToday.com, I got it for $269. They gave me $180 off."
