Remember when gasoline sold for $3.45 a gallon? It still does if your vehicle can use E-85.
E-85 is 85 percent corn ethanol made in America and only 15 percent oil-based gasoline. Right now, it's 55 cents cheaper than regular gas.
There's a slight reduction in fuel efficiency, but the dollars saved make up for that.
Most vehicles in the United States are still not capable of using E-85, but more and more American car manufacturers in Detroit are making their cars flexible enough to take the E-85.
Finding an E-85 pump can still be a challenge. Sheetz sells the lower-priced fuel at three service stations.
As the price difference between foreign oil and corn-based ethanol gets bigger, watch for more demand for E-85.
This year, 32 models can take the cheaper fuel and by 2012, Chrysler, Ford and General Motors have pledged to have 50 percent of their fleet fully capable of using E-85.
Watch out for those conversion kits sold on the Internet. Make sure they are EPA approved.
Visit the
National Ethanol Vehicle Coalition website to see if your car can use E-85 or where you can buy the fuel.
