Hottest Toy For 2009: Zhu Zhu Pets

ROBINSON (KDKA) ― The hottest got-to-have toy for 2009 is a furry little hamster looking creature called a Zhu Zhu Pet.

They're extremely hard to find and people who find them are willing to pay a premium to get them.

A Zhu Zhu is a battery powered hamster. They've quickly managed to scoot, coo and claw their way into kids' hearts.

"This is the toy to have, so they went online to look and they're available, but they cost about 10 times more than they are supposed to," Jennifer Ruprecht said.

KDKA's Rick Dayton made a stop at Learning Express of Robinson and hit the jackpot.

Ruprecht was there too and immediately bought three.

"I'm very excited because I just asked my kids what was the toy of the year and they said these. So I was excited that they were going to be really happy and I can be mom of the year for once," Ruprecht said.

Jennifer Palashoff and twin sister Julie Toussaint own the learning express of Robinson and they said they have received a lot of phone calls and questions about them.

"They would range from 20 calls to 40 calls a day, and it's because the parents want to satisfy what the kids want, and that's what the kids are seeing," Palashoff said.

"The closer you get to Christmas, the more desperation you start to hear in the parents voices and as moms, we know that desperation and so it's particularly hard for us," Toussaint said.

Most supplies of the Zhu Zhu Pets are long gone as are the accessories like the adventure ball.
