AG Warns Against Bogus Sweepstakes Letters

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Pennsylvania Attorney General Tom Corbett is warning Steelers fans to beware of bogus Super Bowl Sweepstakes offers and too good to be true travel package offers.

He says scam letters have been sent to people all over the state. The letter claims to be affiliated with the NFL and Visa.

It informs the consumer that he or she has won a $100,000 prize plus two Super Bowl tickets.

The letter also includes a check for several thousand dollars to use to pay the taxes for their prize. The consumer simply wire transfers money to a claim agent who will verify their winnings.

"Unfortunately anyone who tried to claim this type of prize will quickly learn that there is no $100,000 jackpot, there are no Super Bowl tickets," explains Corbett. "The check that they were given to pay the taxes will eventually be returned as counterfeit or forged and that the money they wire transferred is lost."

There are dozens of travel packages and ticket offers for fans traveling to the Super Bowl in Tampa.

Corbett encourages fans to shop carefully and don't assume every package includes airfare, hotel reservations and game tickets.

He urges fans to get all the terms up front in writing and review everything before spending any money.
