IRS Sets Up Email Box To Report Phishing Scams
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
With so-called "phishing" scams on the rise, the IRS has set up an email address for taxpayers to report suspicious activity.
One scam has con artists sending bogus emails claiming that the recipient has a tax refund coming to them and all they have to do to collect is click on a link within the email and send their personal information.
But, as IRS Commissioner Mark W. Everson explains, the Internal Revenue Service does not send emails to taxpayers asking for any private information.
"The IRS does not send out unsolicited e-mails asking for personal information," Everson adds. "Don't be taken in by these criminals."
It's just a scheme to con unsuspecting taxpayers into giving out personal information like their Social Security numbers and birth dates.
With these types of phishing expeditions on-the-rise, the IRS has set up an electronic mailbox where people can send these fraudulent emails.
Taxpayers who suspect that they have been targeted by one of these scams are asked to forward the information to
phishing@irs.gov.
