Cat Food Recalled Amid Reports Of Health Problems
According to the company, the affected cat food was pulled from store shelves on September 23rd
WASHINGTON (KDKA/AP) ―
Reports of health problems in nearly two-dozen cats -- including some in Pennsylvania -- prompted a pet food manufacturer to recall select bags of its dry cat food.
Diamond Pet Foods recalled its Premium Edge Finicky Adult Cat and Premium Edge Hairball because the food does not contain enough thiamine, which is an essential nutrient for cats.
Cats with no other source of nutrition could develop a thiamine deficiency -- leading to gastrointestinal or neurological problems and eventually death, if left untreated.
Early signs of a potential problem include decreased appetite, salivation, vomiting and weight loss. More advanced symptoms may include an unsteady gait, seizures and falls.
The company has confirmed 21 cases of a nutrient deficiency in cats in Pennsylvania and New York.
The food was sold at stores in Pennsylvania, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, New York, Virginia, Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.
The affected cat food was pulled from store shelves on September 23rd, according to the company. No incidents have been reported since October 19th.
Consumers can return the recalled food to its place of purchase for a full refund.
