Does It Really Do That: Aqua Globes

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Dead, dried up plants. At one time or another, most of us have had to face this sad sight.

It's either because we forget to water our plants or go away without finding someone to do it for us. But no more, not if Aqua Globes does what it claims.

The Aqua Globe promises to keep plants perfectly watered for up to two weeks.

But does it really do that?

KDKA's Consumer Editor Yvonne Zanos and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette garden guru Doug Oster put the Aqua Globe to the test using three peace lilies and three potted mums.

One Oster will not water at all for the next two weeks, one he'll water by hand and one the Aqua Globe water.

Aqua Globes claim to be hand-blown glass. The directions say first to fill up the globes with water.

According to the instructions, do not put the globe into the soil because it is delicate and could break; instead use a small stick or tool. Once the globes are in, our testers are concerned about the angle and that it may tilt over.

Returning two weeks later, all three peace lilies look fine, but the mums tell the story.

The plant Oster did not water is wilted and sad-looking. The one that Oster did water looks full and happy, and the one the Aqua Globe watered looks pretty good too.

You can see the Aqua Globes working by the bubbles that climb up the stem. Oster says he had to fiddle with the angle of one globe that seemed to be draining too much.

But overall, Oster says, "It actually has the perfect amount of water in there. It only takes what it needs, which is nice. As the soil dries out, it starts to release the water."

For the final grade, Oster says the Aqua Globe definitely works.

"If you like the way they look, if you don't like to water, put these in all your plants and you would be good to go," said Oster. "I think it's a great thing, so definite thumbs up, definite thumbs up from me."
