West Virginia Escapes With 28-24 Win Over UConn

West Virginia Mountaineers News

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (KDKA/AP) ― West Virginia needed a late rally in order to avoid an upset and knock off UConn 28-24 Saturday.

UConn played an emotional game after the stabbing death of cornerback Jasper Howard on Sunday outside a university-sponsored dance.

Teammates Andre Dixon and Kashif Moore carried his helmet and jersey onto the field before kickoff.

Noel Devine's 56-yard touchdown scamper with 2:10 to play proved to be the game-winner for No. 22 West Virginia.

Devine ran for 171 of his 178 yards in the second half as West Virginia (6-1, 2-0 Big East) overcame the inspired play of the Huskies (4-3, 1-2).

Jarrett Brown ran for a score and threw for another for the Mountaineers.

The fourth quarter was a wild one to say the least.

Cody Endres' hooked up with Marcus Easley for an 84-yard touchdown that put the Huskies ahead 24-21 with 3:50 left.

After Devine's touchdown, UConn drove to the West Virginia 33 before Chris Neild intercepted Endres on fourth down to clinch the game.
