Wannstedt Explains Strategy In USF Win

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― When you examine the Pitt Panther's 41-14 win over USF on Saturday, one statistic jumps off the page being third down conversions.

The Panthers were six-for-seven in the first half and 11-for-16 overall in the game.

Panthers coach Dave Wannstedt sat down with KDKA's Bob Pompeani in the film room to show him what the Panthers did to neutralize the USF pass rush.

"We felt like when you have two number one draft picks and really a very talented defensive line, they came into the game as the number one defense in the Big East. The decision was made that we had to be sure that [Bill Stull] had time to throw the ball," Wannstedt said.

Stull was given that important extra second or two to get rid of the ball, due to the support blocking of the running backs and fullbacks.

Fullback Henry Hynoski helped many times by chipping a pass rusher to give Stull time to throw the ball

Running backs Dion Lewis and Ray Graham also helped out the offensive lines on play fakes. When both were on the field at the same time, one typically stayed in to block while the other jumped up to the line to pick up the extra man when USF brought pressure.

"With pressure on a quarterback, I don't care how good you are, you're not going to be effective. Sometimes pressures are worse than sacks because now you have potential to throw under pressure to make bad throws and throw interceptions," Wannstedt said.
