Flooding Destroyed Thousands Of Pitt Diplomas

By Web Intern Liz Murphy
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― About 3,000 University of Pittsburgh students won't be receiving their diplomas on time; but not because of lagging grades or insufficient credits.

This time, Mother Nature is apparently to blame.

Last week's storms caused problems for people all over western Pennsylvania -- as floodwaters submerged homes and cars around the area.

The severe weather also caused problems at the University of Pittsburgh when heavy rains flooded the ground floor of an Oakland office building -- destroying thousands of diplomas.

Pitt spokesman John Fedele said the diplomas will arrive at students' homes about 10 days late as the university scrambles to order all new documents, according to the Associated Press. Fedele expects the diplomas to be in the mail by July 2.

Students routinely receive their diplomas in the mail a few weeks after graduation.

Pitt officials have not confirmed a cost estimate for the new order of diplomas, according the Associated Press.
